For as long as I can remember, religion has played a major role in my life - something that I have tried very hard to battle against. Growing up, it seemed like religion dictated every single decision I had to make. From the food that I ate to the friends that I kept and even the relationships that I formed, it felt like everything was filtered through an incredibly rigid religious lens. Unfortunately, this type of environment is often a breeding ground for fear, guilt and shame which ultimately led me to hating religion itself.
Nowadays, however, my relationship with religion has been replaced by one of greater understanding and appreciation. Although I still don’t subscribe to the restrictive sets of rules that come with many mainstream religions, I have found a much deeper connection with Jesus. For me, Jesus symbolizes the compassion and love that was often lacking in traditional religion - something which I can relate with on much more personal level.
In essence, what attracts me so much about Jesus is his message of peace and acceptance rather than judgement. This message resonates strongly within me because it echoes how we should treat one another with kindness and understanding - no matter where each person is from or what beliefs they hold onto. Furthermore, it also allows me to continue being faithful without having to adhere to a strict set of moral principles or pre-determined codes of conduct. Instead, I am given freedom to explore different aspects of life while embracing my own unique values and spirituality without fear or judgement from anyone else.
All things considered, Jesus represents an incredibly liberating force which allows each individual the ability to find their inner truth without being limited by any existing external forces - something which cannot be said for traditional forms of religion. Though we may feel like we have little power against authority institutions that do not align with our values, it is important to remember that empowered individuals working together can make a powerful difference in any unjust system – ultimately offering hope and integration into “The Kingdom” that Jesus spoke of so often.
